Most likely you are. Are you using a relay or running the pump directly from the Orange wire? How is the pump grounded? Sorry, I meant to mention that it is an in-line pump and I am using the orange wire directly to the pump with no relay and the pump is grounded directly to the frame of the truck.

Fuel injection has been around for a long time. In fact, the first of the mechanical variety appeared on French aircraft in the early s, but most of us are more familiar with the early systems pioneered for race cars by Ed Winfield and Stu Hilborn.

By the '50s mechanical fuel injection was widely used on all forms of American competition cars while Mercedes and other European manufacturers began using a form of it built by Bosch on production vehicles.

Simplified Sophistication: Installing FiTech EFI

On this side of the pond it was the legendary Rochester fuel injection that was available in on Corvettes and Pontiac Bonnevilles that made American enthusiasts recognize the merits of fuel injection for street-driven performance applications.

The first to try and combine electronic controls and fuel injection for automotive use was Bendix, a company best known for their dual-servo brake design. Bendix began work on their Electrojector in the middle of the '50s. Rambler is said to have experimented with it and Chrysler offered it as an option in but the Electrojector was trouble plagued and most were replaced with carburetors to keep customers happy ironically Bosch bought the rights to the Bendix design, which three decades later became the Bosch D-Jetronic.

By the mid '70s GM introduced a basic electronically controlled fuel injection on the Cadillac Seville and by the '80s sophisticated digital computer controls became the norm.

As often happens with new technology, the aftermarket embraced electronic fuel injection then traced the OEM's trajectory in the development of it. Like the OEMs, the first aftermarket units were crude and trouble prone. Many hand manual adjustments to "tune" the system while driving. In some cases, it was possible to "tune" the engine until it wouldn't run and soon there were more systems for sale cheap at swap meets than there were on running cars.

Thankfully those days are gone. It came as no surprise that with the increasing sophistication of aftermarket fuel injection the complication of installation increased as well. There were electronic control units to mount and a variety of sensors connected by a big, bulky wiring harness.

And if the installation process wasn't enough to scare off some buyers, the price was. Both those concerns have been addressed by FiTech. Choosing a System The team at FiTech has years of experience producing ECMs for industrial, marine, and OE applications and that led to their affordable aftermarket fuel injection systems that use OEM-level engineering and components. FiTech offers a variety of throttle body systems, port injection, and LS induction systems, but for our purposes we're dealing with just the throttle bodies—and there are a number of them to choose from, which may seem confusing at first.

They offer everything to successfully swap over to digital fuel squirting, and even offer products designed to simplify the install. While the process has gotten progressively easier to install fuel injection, we were still hearing some questions as to what significant considerations reside under the throttle body that folks need to consider.

As EFI has become such a game-changer, and swapping over has become a one part-number process, we wondered if there might be something between the valve covers that might create a snafu for those seeking to make the jump.

Even with all the improvements that EFI can bring to fuel control, an engine is still basically an air pump. As such, using a single or dual-plane intake will have the same effect on EFI as it would on a carbureted engine. We spent some time with FiTech owner, Ken Farrell, and asked him a few questions an enthusiast might have when making the swap or building an engine designed to utilize this modern technology. Are there any differences between single- and dual-plane intakes when using fuel injection?

Do the same rules apply as with the carb? When using a throttle body fuel-injection system, you are introducing fuel at the same location as a carburetor. This allows both single- and dual-plane intakes to be used with the same characteristics that they have with a carburetor.

FiTech EFI uses an annular discharge to provide fuel, but unlike a carb, it is driven by higher pressure in the fuel line, not by the lower pressure in the intake.

Does removing the vacuum dependency of a carb to deliver fuel have specific benefits? Electronic fuel injection uses pressure to introduce fuel into the engine. This gives the ability of immediate fuel delivery on tip-in of the throttle. This allows for better throttle response over a carburetor. Since the camshaft dictates so much of the running characteristics of an engine, camshaft consideration when choosing EFI is equally important. The compact, bolt-on unit has very few wires, an internal regulator, and on-board ECU hidden behind the front plate.

Many of the necessary sensors are mated directly to the throttle body to keep installation issues low.

Using a larger duration camshaft will typically cause more valve overlap, thereby lowering engine vacuum. Conversely, a camshaft with a larger lobe centerline spread will typically allow for more engine vacuum due to less valve overlap. When selecting a camshaft for use with EFI, you want to keep valve overlap to a minimum, so, when using larger duration camshafts, you will also want a larger centerline to limit the time both intake and exhaust valves are open.

This diagram from Comp Cams helps illustrate how cam lobe duration and position of the center line can affect overlap. Larger duration cams and closer center lines can increase the amount of overlap, thereby decreasing engine vacuum. How does EFI interact with ignition timing? To use the availability of timing control, you will need to install a two-wire distributor like this MSD Pro Billet distributor. EFI typically allows for more aggressive timing for both performance and economy depending on the engines needs and what it is capable of handling.

In these instances, you would want to use timing control to retard timing under boost or nitrous activation to allow the engine to perform safely.
